Although limited to a skull, the Pakicetus fossil provides precious details on the origins of cetaceans.(TPO 2)

Q: The word “precious” in the passage is closest in meaning to

A.Exact

B.Scarce

C.Valuable

D.Initial

Among academics including the study of Northern Renaissance prints (reproducible graphic artworks), an orthodox position can be said to have appeared. This position treats Renaissance prints as passive representations of their time—documents that responsibly record contemporary events, opinions, and beliefs—and hence as a significant means of accessing the popular contemporary consciousness.

Q: Replacement of the word “passive” (line 2) which of the following words results in the least change in meaning for the passage?

A. disinterested

B. submissive

C. flaccid

D. supine

E. unreceptive

This position treats Renaissance prints as passive representations of their time—documents that responsibly record contemporary events, opinions, and beliefs—and hence as a significant means of accessing the popular contemporary consciousness.

On the contrary, pioneering studies such as those by Scribner and Moxey take a markedly disparate approach, in accordance with which Northern Renaissance prints were purposive, active, and crucial shaping forces in the communities that produced them. Scribner, for instance, contends that religious and political prints of the German Reformation (ca.1517–1555) functioned as prevalent propaganda: tools in an energetic campaign intended to altering people’s behavior, attitudes, and beliefs.

A critical consensus has appeared that Mary McCarthy will be remembered principally as an essayist rather than as a novelist. But despite her formidable gifts as a polemical and discursive writer, and for all her reputation as an intellectual who sacrificed feeling to intelligence, what powers McCarthy’s best essays are her fictional rather than exactingly intellectual gifts.

Q: In the context in which it appears, “discursive” most nearly means

A. prolific

B. sophistic

C. rambling

D. analytical

E. circuitous
