This year’s U.S. News Best Global Universities ranking includes 2,000 top institutions, up from nearly 1,750 last year, spanning 95 countries, an increase from 90 countries last year.

The U.S. News Global University Rankings focus more on the academic research and overall reputation of institutions, rather than individual undergraduate or graduate programs.

Number of publications that are among the top 10% most cited: 12.5%

Analysis of the 2023 U.S. News Global University Rankings
In this year’s U.S. News Global University Rankings, the top 10 institutions remain the same as last year, but their ranking order has shifted.
Harvard University continues to lead as the world’s top university, while MIT, Stanford, and UC Berkeley round out the top four. Oxford and Cambridge remain steady as the only two British universities in the top 10.
Most notably, the University of Washington jumped to sixth place globally, surpassing Columbia University and moving up one spot from last year. With a U.S. News national ranking of 55, UW managed to surpass world-renowned institutions like Johns Hopkins, Cambridge, Yale, and Penn in the global ranking—truly impressive!
Meanwhile, Princeton University, which has topped the U.S. News national ranking for 11 consecutive years, once again fell short of the global top 10, remaining in 16th place.
Canada’s highest-ranked university is the University of Toronto, placing 18th, down two spots from last year. Australia has two universities in the top 30: the University of Melbourne (27th) and the University of Sydney (28th).
China’s Tsinghua University rose three spots to 23rd, maintaining its lead over the National University of Singapore as the top university in Asia. Peking University placed 39th, up six spots from last year.
Finally, it’s worth noting that while Ivy League schools represent the highest academic standards in the U.S., institutions like Dartmouth and Brown rank outside the top 100 globally. This shows that in research-focused global rankings, not all Ivy League schools are equally favored.
