Business analytics is undoubtedly one of the most popular fields for graduate study in recent years. So, what are the BA master’s programs like at Hong Kong’s top universities? Why has business analytics become so hot? How do the BA programs at the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology compare? What key considerations should you keep in mind when applying? This article provides a detailed analysis and application advice for Hong Kong BA programs.
Why Is Business Analytics So Popular?
Why is business analytics so hot? Why does everyone want to study it? Business Analytics (BA) is an interdisciplinary field. It is built on business knowledge, uses quantitative and programming methods, connects with the internet and Big Data, and leverages data analytics to optimize decision-making and realize the commercial application of big data. In today’s information age, with ever-accelerating tech development, data permeates every aspect of daily life. The internet, phones, fitness bands, sensors, and mobile apps we use are constantly generating vast databases with potential business value. Learning how to effectively turn these databases into business opportunities is exactly what business analytics teaches!
Below is an introduction to the BA programs at the top three Hong Kong universities.
HKU – MSc in Business Analytics

This program aims to prepare students for careers in business analytics. Business analytics professionals need essential skills and knowledge in areas such as business, databases, statistics, information, and advanced topics like business data mining, big data, etc. To ready students for the job market, the program partners with Cyberport Hong Kong, an innovative tech hub and creative digital community comprising over 800 startups and organizations. As part of the capstone core course, students can gain project practice opportunities and real business analytics experience at Cyberport.
Curriculum:

From the curriculum, the program consists of 4 core courses + 5 elective courses + 1 capstone course, totaling 10 courses. The program is divided into three streams: general analytics, information analytics, and operations analytics. Core courses include: Business Intelligence and Analytics, Business Statistics, Quantitative Analysis, and Operations Analytics.
The electives feature a wealth of data-related courses: Cloud-based Big Data Analytics, Data Mining, Predictive Modeling, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, as well as business-focused ones like Quantitative Trading, Financial Engineering, Marketing Analytics, and Business Simulation.
Students can also choose two electives from other programs under the Faculty of Business and Economics: Master of Accounting, Master of Economics, Master of Finance, Master of Finance in Financial Technology, Master of Global Management, or MSc in Marketing. Clearly, the value is substantial.
Application Requirements:
GPA: 3.7+
GRE: 325+. The school’s official stance is that it’s not required, but if you have it, it will be considered. Plus, as Hong Kong graduate applications become increasingly intense, the bar has been rising year after year. CheersYou(清柚教育) Bro strongly recommends bringing a GRE score when applying, as it will provide a significant advantage.
Language scores: IELTS 7+ / TOEFL 100+
Background requirements: A bachelor’s degree with a certain foundation in quantitative/programming skills (proving you fit the program’s training direction and can keep up with the coursework). Prerequisites: calculus, linear algebra, statistics, probability theory, and programming courses like R and Python. If you haven’t touched a programming language before, it’s best to start with Python. The official website doesn’t specify work experience requirements, but competitors all have rich work and internship experience. CheersYou(清柚教育) Bro recommends having 2-3 highly relevant internships at big-name companies. Also, there is no interview for this program.
Career Development:

Let’s look at the graduate destination data from HKU. Among them, 90% of graduates found a job within 3 months, and the rest chose to pursue further studies.
Among those employed, 70% entered the finance/banking sector, 20% went into consulting, and the remaining 10% entered other fields (real estate, e-commerce, etc.).
Companies they joined include: consulting firms (Accenture, McKinsey, Bain), Big Four accounting firms, finance (Bank of China, HSBC, Standard Chartered Bank), and tech companies (Tencent, Alibaba, Google, Huawei, and other major firms).
The roles are also diverse, such as: IT Business Analyst, Data Analytics Scientist, System Analyst, Business Analytics Manager, and Computer Science Data Analyst. Business analytics, as a bridge between IT technology, data analysis, and business decision-making, has a huge talent gap, and the salary levels are very high.
HKUST – MSc in Business Analytics

Comparative Analysis of BA Programs at the Top Three Hong Kong Universities and Application Advice
In terms of curriculum, the core courses at the three schools are largely similar. However, when it comes to electives, HKU and CUHK are relatively more flexible, allowing students to study knowledge from various domains. HKUST’s business analytics curriculum is more technical, with a greater emphasis on statistics, modeling, some algorithm courses, and big data technology, alongside a few management-related courses, making it highly practical.
Regarding application difficulty, the number of applicants to Hong Kong surged by 77% in the 22Fall cycle compared to 21Fall, making competition extremely fierce. Top students from Mainland China’s 985/211 universities, plus overseas undergraduates from the US, Canada, the UK, etc., are all competing together, so the difficulty can be imagined.
Given this intense “involution” in Hong Kong, we also advise students not to fixate solely on Hong Kong schools; countries like the US and the UK are also well worth considering.
Take the US as an example: for mainland Chinese students with a GPA of 3.7+, getting into a top-30 US school is quite feasible. Moreover, in the US, business analytics falls under STEM programs and enjoys a 3-year OPT, allowing you to work in the US for some time after graduation, which can be very helpful when returning to seek jobs. Here are some other recommended schools and programs:
Duke – MQM: Business Analytics
Columbia – Business Analytics
JHU – MS in Business Analytics and Risk Management
WUSTL – Business Analytics
