Many Australian undergrads struggle with the question: should I do an Honors year after my bachelor's? When is it necessary? And how does it affect graduate school applications?
First, before deciding, let's look at the qualifications needed to apply for Honors.
There are generally two pathways:
· During your bachelor's, if you achieve very high grades (top 10% or so), the university may contact you before graduation and invite you to add an extra Honors year. If you accept, completing that year (mainly research-based courses) earns you an Honors degree.
· Some programs—like engineering, architecture, psychology—require the Honors year as part of the bachelor's. As long as you pass your bachelor's, you proceed directly to the final-year Honors component.
However, note that Honors is not equivalent to a Master's. Here's a comparison using the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF):

So, whether you should do Honors depends partly on your academic or career goals:
· If you want to stop at a bachelor's level, in China, a "Bachelor degree" and an "Honours degree" are largely treated the same—no real distinction.
· If you don't want to stop at a bachelor's, a Master's is clearly a higher qualification than both Honors and Bachelor's. A Master's allows you to change fields and isn't restricted to your undergraduate major, and it's far more recognized in China than Honors.
To elaborate:
· If you plan to pursue a PhD, Honors can be a good choice. It may let you skip the Master's and go straight into a doctoral program, saving a year of time and tuition.
· If you plan to work in Australia, Honors can help. Australian employers often prefer candidates with Honors over a plain Bachelor's.
· If you plan to apply for a Master's in the UK, US, or Hong Kong, Honors is optional. In recent years, UK and US universities have become much more accepting of three-year Australian bachelor's degrees, and the Honors year might actually lower your GPA, making it not worth it for Master's applicants.
· If you plan to return to China, there's absolutely no need to do Honors.
