Cognitive Science is a multidisciplinary field, and UC San Diego has always been at the forefront of this area. The issues that cognitive science focuses on are divided into three main categories:
- Brain - the neuroanatomy and processes underlying cognitive phenomena;
- Behavior - individual cognitive activities and their interaction with others and the sociocultural environment, including the use of language, information, and media;
- Computation - the ability of mathematical and computer systems to simulate cognitive and neural phenomena and represent information, as well as the role of computers as cognitive tools.
The department works closely with the Language Research Center, Human Development Center, Salk Institute for Biological Studies, UC San Diego Medical Center, San Diego Supercomputer Center, Functional MRI Center, Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind, and other academic departments and research groups, providing many excellent resources and opportunities.
The department encourages students to actively participate and share their ideas about courses, research, and other topics with faculty and staff. Undergraduates can join the Cognitive and Neuroscience (SCAN) organization, which provides opportunities for undergraduates to meet students and faculty from UC San Diego and other institutions, visit research labs, and build professional connections.
