Industrial Engineering & Operations Research (IEOR)
(Master of Engineering program in Industrial Engineering & Operations Research )

UC Berkeley IEOR Program Overview
This program focuses on industrial engineering and operations research with an emphasis on enterprise applications. It highlights optimization analysis, risk modeling, simulation, and data analytics. Machine learning and data science are the latest topics in this field, combining stochastic and optimization results for an increasing number of products and services. It aims to prepare students for professional practice, explicitly developing skills in managing complex projects and directing financial and operational affairs.

The program offers two tracks when applying: General and FinTech. Overall, FinTech is more challenging. If FinTech track conditions are not met, the school will automatically transfer the application to the General track and re-evaluate it. The FinTech track requires college-level programming ability in Python, C++, or Java.
UC Berkeley IEOR Program Advantages
UCB’s IEOR program does not have very strict requirements for applicants’ undergraduate backgrounds, though most students come from math, statistics, and business/econ backgrounds. Thus, it is very suitable for those wanting to switch fields. However, applicants with relevant backgrounds will be more favored.
Applicants with a U.S. undergraduate degree or overseas exchange experience have an advantage, as the program places great importance on international experience during admissions. So, if you plan to apply, you can prepare in this area—for example, by attending a summer school to boost your chances.
The program offers great flexibility in course selection: as long as you fulfill the required IEOR courses, the remaining courses are completely free to meet your development needs. Although it’s a one-year program, the university and college host many job fairs, and you can also network, which greatly aids in job hunting.
