Relatively speaking, the bar for materials programs is not very high. Last year we helped a US undergraduate student with a 3.6 GPA successfully get into UCB. Moreover, most US graduate programs do not explicitly require a specific major, because materials typically encompass metals, inorganic non-metallics, polymers, electronics, optics, and magnetic materials. Therefore, as long as your background is related to physics, chemistry, mechanical, civil, or biological engineering, you are eligible to apply.
