USC Launches School of Advanced Computing, Admissions Open for Fall 2024

返回新鲜资讯Back to News

To meet the fierce competition in computer and data science, the University of Southern California (USC) has invested $1 billion in its Frontiers of Computing initiative and officially established the School of Advanced Computing. Focusing on cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and data science, it is highly welcoming to interdisciplinary students. The school plans to hire nearly 100 top scholars over the next decade, aiming to cultivate cross-disciplinary tech talent and award over 28,000 relevant degrees in the next ten years.

Located in LA's Silicon Beach, home to numerous tech giants, its prime location offers students abundant internship and employment opportunities. The school will welcome its first cohort in fall 2024, offering popular courses in computer science, data science, and more. CheersYou(清柚教育) recommends students interested in switching to or advancing in computer-related fields to closely follow the new school's admission updates, plan application strategies early, and seize the opportunity at this top university.

For many international students choosing the U.S., Computer Science and Data Science are practically synonymous with the "three goods": good jobs, good earning potential, and good immigration pathways.

Thus, those who "code" as undergrads continue to pursue graduate studies, while non-"coder" majors have also sparked a "trend of switching to CS."

Whether studying business, law, communications, civil engineering, or even anthropology, everyone wants to "press a button to switch" and achieve "coding freedom." It's not hard to imagine how fierce the competition in CS & DS tracks is each application season.

And U.S. universities have clearly noticed this; some added new programs, some even established entire new schools, showing the utmost importance!

USC Establishes the School of Advanced Computing

This May, the University of Southern California (USC) announced the launch of the "Frontiers of Computing" initiative, a 10-year, $1 billion comprehensive plan to expand USC's advanced computing education and research. Centered on ethics, it aims to infuse and expand advanced computing technology across all university programs and curricula, accelerating innovation through novel and powerful educational and research opportunities across all disciplines.

The initiative includes the establishment of a brand-new school called the School of Advanced Computing.

In the Frontiers of Computing initiative, the School of Advanced Computing will serve as a hub and incubator for student and faculty advanced computing projects, and promote research and innovation in advanced computing technologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, data science, blockchain, and quantum information.

Notably, whether students are majoring in science, business, humanities, or the arts, they will all have the opportunity to study at USC's School of Advanced Computing, making it very friendly for those seeking interdisciplinary study.

Over the next decade, USC will award over 28,000 computing-related undergraduate and graduate degrees, helping students acquire computer skills across different disciplines and degrees, preparing them for future tech careers. The new School of Advanced Computing will position USC as a primary source of tech talent on the West Coast.

According to USC, by 2025, they will hire 30 leading experts in computer science and computing-related fields to teach at the new school; by 2030, they will recruit an additional 60 top scholars.

While increasing educational and research opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students, the faculty expansion will broaden USC's network of collaborators in academia and industry. This also means that students of the new school will gain more opportunities and resources within the industry.

The new school is located in Silicon Beach, home to Google, Amazon, SpaceX, and other leading tech giants. This unparalleled geographical advantage will help USC students achieve both academic and professional success.

The new school is about to begin admissions and will welcome its first cohort in Fall 2024, housing programs in computer science, data science, information technology, and advanced computing.

The new school will be part of the Viterbi School of Engineering. In addition to the newly renamed USC Thomas Lord Department of Computer Science, it will also encompass programs in Data Science, Information Technology, and Advanced Computing. Currently, the master's programs under the Department of Computer Science include various specializations such as Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Game Development, Robotics, and more.

The USC CS department currently offers the following programs:

The new school's headquarters will be located in the Dr. Allen and Charlotte Ginsburg Human-Centered Computation Hall. This seven-story, 116,000-square-foot building is currently under construction and is slated for completion in spring 2024. The new hall will feature interactive spaces and labs, and will be USC's first LEED-certified building.
