Times Higher Education (THE) has just released its 2024 World University Rankings.
According to THE, the latest world university rankings feature 108 countries and regions, with a total of 1,904 institutions listed, once again breaking last year's record for assessment scale. This marks the largest-ever evaluation of global higher education systems by the ranking.

The rankings show that Oxford University remains firmly in first place for the eighth consecutive year, with Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, and the University of Cambridge following closely to round out the top five. The top ten continues to be dominated by US and UK institutions. Chinese universities also performed impressively, with a total of 13 institutions entering the top 200.
THE World University Rankings Criteria
Different ranking organizations use different methodologies. Compared to other world university rankings, THE places greater emphasis on using performance indicators to measure the performance of research-intensive universities.

Teaching (the learning environment) - 29.5%
Research environment - 29%
Research quality - 30%
International outlook - 7.5%
Industry - 4.0%
Highlights of the 2024 THE World University Rankings
US and UK Institutions Continue to Lead
In this year’s ranking, three UK institutions and seven US institutions occupy the top ten. Oxford University has topped the list for the eighth consecutive year, beating out a host of elite American universities. The top ten institutions remain the same as last year, although the specific rankings have shifted slightly.
Among US universities, Stanford ranks highest this year, with MIT, Harvard, and Princeton placing third through sixth, respectively.
US universities continue to demonstrate their strength in numbers: they occupy 7 of the top 10, 12 of the top 20, and with 179 institutions listed, they remain first globally in total representation.
Strong Performance by Chinese Universities
In this ranking, a total of seven mainland Chinese universities made it into the top 100 of the world university rankings. Tsinghua University and Peking University rank 12th and 14th globally, leading the Asian higher education system.
Mainland China has a total of 86 institutions on the list this year, ranking fifth globally in terms of the number of universities included.
