2025 QS Ranking Overview
In this year's QS World University Rankings, universities in the UK and Australia once again dominated!
Imperial College London performed especially brilliantly, surpassing Oxford and Cambridge to claim the top spot in the UK. In addition, it overtook Harvard and Stanford, soaring from sixth last year to second globally.
The top five are: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (unchanged), Imperial College London (up 4 places), University of Oxford (unchanged), Harvard University (unchanged), and University of Cambridge (down 3 places).
This is also the 13th consecutive year that MIT has ranked first in the world!
Looking at this year's rankings, in addition to dominant performances by US and UK universities, Australian universities continued their strong momentum, with three entering the Top 20: University of Melbourne (13th), University of Sydney (18th), and University of New South Wales (19th). All Australian universities in the Top 100 also performed well, with the University of Adelaide climbing 7 spots to 82nd, firmly within the Top 100.
2024 U.S. University Rankings
A total of 25 US universities entered the Top 100, still occupying half of the rankings, but their overall rankings saw a significant decline.
Only 7 US universities made the Top 20 this year: MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Caltech, University of Pennsylvania, UC Berkeley, and Cornell.
Ivy League rankings saw a major plunge, with the University of Chicago, Princeton University, and Yale University falling out of the Top 20, ranking 21st, 22nd, and 23rd respectively. Columbia University saw a particularly large drop, falling 11 places to 34th. Brown also continued to decline, dropping from 73rd last year to 79th.
Purdue University rose 10 places to 89th, retaining its Top 100 status. Meanwhile, Boston University failed to break into the Top 100, ranking 108th.
2024 UK University Rankings
Among UK institutions, 15 made the Top 100, with 4 entering the Top 10: Imperial College London, Oxford, Cambridge, and UCL.
LSE, which performed well last year, dropped 5 places to 50th. The G5 performed strongly overall, while King's College London, University of Manchester, University of Edinburgh, and University of Warwick generally saw declines.
The 'Top 100 gatekeepers' University of St Andrews and University of Nottingham have been pushed out of the Top 100.
2024 Asia University Rankings
National University of Singapore remains the top in Asia. Peking University is the only Mainland Chinese university in the global Top 20 this year, ranking 14th, up 3 places from last year.
Mainland Chinese universities saw improved rankings, with five entering the global top 50: Peking University (14th), Tsinghua University (20th), Fudan University (39th), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (45th), and Zhejiang University (47th).
Hong Kong universities all rose in rankings this year, with the three entering the Top 50 seeing significant increases: the University of Hong Kong at 17th (up 9), Chinese University of Hong Kong at 36th (up 11), and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology soaring 13 places to 47th, re-entering the Top 50.
