The UC California system recently officially updated Fall 2024 freshman/transfer admissions data.
This is the first admissions cycle for UC since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned affirmative action in June 2023. This year, the UC system received a total of 250,436 applications, up 1.5% from 246,833 last year.
In Fall 2024, a total of 166,706 students were admitted across the nine UC campuses, including 137,200 freshmen and 29,506 transfer students.

UC Freshman / Transfer Admission Overview
UC Freshman Admission Data
The UC system set a new all-time record for the number of freshmen admitted in a single year this year, with a total of 137,200, an increase of 31,400 compared to 2014.
The overall freshman admission rate rose from 62.83% last year to 66.31% this year.
Among them, the admission rate for California-resident freshmen reached 70%, continuing to set a new historical high.
The admission rates for international students and out-of-state students were 64.76% and 55.76%, respectively.
This year, the admission rate for non-resident freshmen was 59.3%, up from 55.3% in 2023. The number of admitted international students increased from 17,420 last year to 19,172 this year.
Due to the lower yield rate of students accepting admission offers, UC campuses may admit non-resident and international students at higher rates.
The UC system continues its commitment to the California Master Plan for Higher Education this year, guaranteeing admission to a UC campus (though not necessarily the campus of choice) for students in the top 9% of their high school or the top 9% statewide, regardless of standardized test scores.
Although the number and rate of admitted international freshmen and out-of-state freshmen have increased, the UC system's enrollment policy still favors California residents, and the proportion of enrolled non-resident freshmen is expected to continue to decline.
UC Transfer Admission Data
Due to the impact of the pandemic, UC transfer applications had previously declined. This year, total UC transfer applications rebounded with a 9% increase, with the number of domestic applicants from California community colleges rising by 8%.
The admission rate for California community college students increased by nearly 8% this year, with 26,430 community college students receiving admission offers.
Among in-state community college transfer students from underrepresented groups, the admission proportion increased by 1.3%, reaching 37.9%. More transfer data is to be officially released by UC.
With increasingly fierce competition for UC admissions, whether applying as a freshman or a transfer student, it is recommended to start planning at least two years in advance and make reasonable and effective use of resources to achieve satisfactory admission results.
What Kind of Students Does UC Look For
Taking freshman applicants as an example, the UC admissions office clearly states on its official website that it will review each application based on 13 criteria, not just GPA.
The school will comprehensively evaluate the applicant's academic performance based on the resources and opportunities available to the student and the abilities demonstrated.
The following are the 13 review criteria provided by UC Admission:
1. Average grade in completed A-G courses, i.e., GPA
2. Number and difficulty of courses completed beyond the A-G requirements
3. UC-approved honors courses, Advanced Placement courses, International Baccalaureate higher-level courses, etc.
4. Rank in the top 9% of the class by the end of junior year of high school
5. Planned 12th grade courses and their difficulty
6. The relationship between your school's academic performance and the educational opportunities available at your high school
7. Academic performance in specific subject areas
8. A particular academic achievement
9. Significant recent academic improvement or progress
10. Special talents, achievements, or awards in a specific area
11. Completion of special projects or unique school activities at your high school
12. Ability to overcome challenges based on life experiences and special circumstances

GPA and High School Courses
In the UC online application system, applicants need to fill in grades from 9th to 11th grade as well as planned 12th grade courses. High school academic performance is one of the most important factors in UC admission decisions.
UC admissions officers will pay attention to the overall GPA trend, fluctuations, and course rigor to help with evaluation. They hope students will attempt challenging academic courses, demonstrating academic challenge and a spirit of advancement. Within one's ability, taking some slightly challenging courses and earning good grades can be a significant plus.
Extracurricular Activities
To stay strongly competitive in UC applications, in addition to academic strength, rich extracurricular activities are also indispensable.
Admissions officers can evaluate students' talents and achievements demonstrated in specific areas through extracurricular activities. The quantity of activities is not the key; admissions officers care more about what you have done and the leadership, creativity, responsibility, and influence you have shown.
Essay Presentation
Essays are a crucial component of applying to U.S. universities, offering a key opportunity to showcase your personal image. To apply to UC, students need not only strong qualifications but also to present a well-rounded self through their essay materials.
Through essays, admissions officers tend to admit students who demonstrate intellectual curiosity, initiative, resilience, and leadership, expecting them to contribute more to the school and society in the future.
After UC eliminated SAT/ACT standardized test requirements, greater emphasis will be placed on the presentation of students' high school academic achievements and comprehensive background capabilities, including GPA, number/difficulty of courses, activity experiences, essays, and other application materials.
Moreover, each UC campus evaluates applications independently, and when reviewing a student's application, they do not consider the admission decisions of other campuses. Thus, the preparation of application materials needs to be even more thorough and comprehensive.
The review mechanism for transfer students is somewhat different from that for freshmen. For freshmen, UC values overall capability, while for transfers, UC focuses more on subject-specific competence.
The trend of UC being difficult to get into is already set, and the days of favorable admission policies for international students are gone.
As a public university, many decisions made by UC are influenced by the local political environment, which is an unavoidable reality.
