Just now, the 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the ShanghaiRanking, was released as scheduled.
As the world's first comprehensive global university ranking, ARWU has been published 22 times since 2003, showcasing the latest top 1,000 research universities worldwide.
As one of the four globally recognized authoritative university rankings (QS, THE, U.S. News, ARWU), ARWU is known for its objective, transparent, and stable methodology, and is widely cited around the world. Many government agencies and universities use this ranking as a benchmark to objectively analyze their own research performance and enhance international competitiveness.

2024 ARWU Ranking Indicators
Unlike other global rankings, the ARWU has always been based on academics with no reputation component, making it a highly authoritative reference for applicants in STEM fields and those focused on academic research.
Its criteria are almost entirely academic indicators related to Nobel Prizes and papers: including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, papers indexed in Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE) and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), and per capita academic performance.

2024 ARWU Ranking Analysis
This year's ARWU Top 10 remains consistent with last year, with slight changes in specific rankings.
Harvard University holds the top spot for the 22nd consecutive year. Stanford University and MIT follow closely, maintaining second and third place globally.
Cambridge remains fourth globally and first in the UK, while Oxford climbs one spot to sixth, edging ahead of Princeton. Université Paris-Saclay rises to 12th, leading continental European universities.
The top-ranked universities in this ARWU are primarily from Western countries led by the U.S. and U.K. For students aiming to pursue cutting-edge academic research, U.S. and U.K. institutions remain the unequivocal first choice.
Top 100 Overview
The overall U.S. performance in the top 100 remains outstanding, underscoring the country's strong advantages in academic research and higher education, with 38 American universities making the list.
Among the global Top 50, U.S. institutions account for 26 spots — holding half the field — including six UC campuses in the top 100.
The U.K. has 5 universities in the Top 50 and 8 in the Top 100. Beyond the Top 10 finishers Cambridge and Oxford, the list includes University College London, Imperial College London, University of Edinburgh, University of Manchester, King's College London, and University of Bristol.
France’s Université Paris-Saclay, as the highest-ranked non-Anglo-American institution, comes in 12th globally. In the Asia-Pacific, China’s Tsinghua University leads at 22nd. In Oceania, Australia’s University of Melbourne ranks 37th globally. The University of Toronto remains first in Canada.
Mainland Chinese Universities
Notably, mainland China has once again surpassed the U.S. in the number of ranked institutions, with 203 universities featured.
Tsinghua University ranks highest at 22nd globally. Peking University rises 5 places to 24th. University of Science and Technology of China and Fudan University break into the global Top 50 for the first time.
Of course, rankings should not be the sole basis for university choice. The ARWU is grounded in academics, and virtually all its indicators are quantitative.
