2025 U.S. News Ranking Methodology
The U.S. News rankings take into account a variety of factors, including acceptance rates, student-faculty ratios, standardized test scores, research output, and employment outcomes.
U.S. News is a ranking list that students and parents highly value and rely on. However, due to recent ranking scandals and withdrawal controversies, its fairness has been increasingly questioned.
This year, U.S. News has further adjusted its ranking methodology. The most significant change is that the six-year graduation rate for first-generation students (those who are the first in their family to attend college) will be removed from the 2025 ranking factors. The original weight will be redistributed to the most closely related Pell Grant graduation rate factor.
U.S. News will continue the increased emphasis on outcome-driven metrics from last year, such as student retention, graduate debt, and post-graduation earnings compared to high school graduates.
National Universities in the United States offer a comprehensive range of programs and enroll large numbers of students, emphasize research, and confer a variety of degrees. They are the primary focus for most students and parents.

2025 U.S. News Rankings Analysis
In the Top 10, Princeton University remains solidly in first place nationwide, with MIT and Harvard occupying the second and third spots, respectively.
Johns Hopkins University and Northwestern University both climbed three spots this year, tying with Caltech and Duke University for sixth place.
The University of Pennsylvania, which ranked sixth last year, almost dropped out of the Top 10 this year, landing exactly at tenth place—a historic low for this Ivy League institution.
Last year, Columbia University announced it would no longer participate in the U.S. News undergraduate rankings, becoming the first major university to refuse to provide data to the ranking agency.
But as with last year, U.S. News continued ranking Columbia regardless, placing it 13th this year.
In the Top 30, Dartmouth rose three spots to enter the Top 15. NYU returned to the Top 30, while Carnegie Mellon University, Washington University in St. Louis, and the University of Southern California all saw ranking improvements.
Among the UC schools, UCLA edged out UC Berkeley to become the top-ranked school in the University of California system, while UCSD, UCD, and UCSB all experienced ranking declines this year.
