When selecting schools for applications, everyone often refers to major authoritative university rankings, and the top ten are usually dominated by long-established American and British institutions.
However, there are many other excellent universities that deserve attention. Some young universities are beginning to play an increasingly important role in the global higher education industry.
Times Higher Education, one of the four most authoritative world university rankings, recently released the 2022 Young University Rankings (universities founded after 1972). They are evaluated based on teaching, academic research, international outlook, and industry collaboration.
Ranking Methodology
This ranking essentially uses the same methodology as the World University Rankings, but the evaluation weights are recalibrated to better reflect the mission of young universities.
The performance indicators are divided into five areas:
Teaching (learning environment) 30%
Research (volume, income, and reputation) 30%
Citations (research influence) 30%
International outlook (staff, students, research) 7.5%
Industry income (knowledge transfer) 2.5%
THE Young University Rankings Top 10
The top ten in the 2022 Young University Rankings are:
From the ranking, we can see that Asian young universities are particularly strong, occupying half of the top ten spots. Places like Hong Kong and Singapore, which are close to home and have rising reputations, are becoming new choices for many international students.
Ranked fourth is Erasmus University Rotterdam, a name that might be less familiar. It is a public research university in Rotterdam, Netherlands, known especially for business and economics research. Two of its professors, Jan Tinbergen (1969) and Guido Imbens (2021), have won the Nobel Prize in Economics.
Ranked third, City University of Hong Kong is consistently recognized as one of the best universities in Hong Kong, offering nearly 50 undergraduate majors and over 100 postgraduate study areas. In 2011, it was awarded five National Science and Technology Awards by China's State Council.
Second place goes to Singapore's Nanyang Technological University, which is also one of the highest-ranked Asian universities in the THE World University Rankings. NTU currently has 25,000 students from over 100 countries and has established strong exchange programs with many renowned institutions worldwide, including Imperial College London, Stanford University, and Peking University.
PSL University (Paris Sciences et Lettres) tops the ranking for the first time this year. Founded in 2010, it aims to be one of the world's leading research universities and now encompasses 25 independently managed academic and research institutions. PSL has established partnerships with institutions such as the University of York, University of Cambridge, Tsinghua University, and the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology.
THE Young University Rankings Top 50
Australia once again has the highest number of institutions in the top 200, with 20 universities. It is followed by the UK (19) and France (17).
