Weta “scammed” $1.4 billion in venture capital, blood-testing startup Theranos (once valued at $9 billion) was a massive fraud, and that juicer company that vanished with $700 million... scandals abound, making it harder for startups to secure funding. Big companies are eyeing the East, and small ones struggle to raise money, dampening the Valley’s once-legendary drive. Still, Silicon Valley remains the world’s premier magnet for top tech talent.
CS Job Markets in Other U.S. Regions
Atlanta: Atlanta has a thriving startup scene and is headquarters to many Fortune 500 companies (e.g., AT&T, UPS, Delta, Coca-Cola). Its tech firms may not offer the lavish perks of Silicon Valley, but the work culture tends to be less intense. Software engineers and other CS professionals in Atlanta earn over $119,000 annually.
Austin: Austin is a hot spot for CS pros, with average salaries around $118,000 and a relatively low cost of living. Google, Facebook, Atlassian, and Oracle all have outposts here, and Apple will soon join them. That’s likely why so many tech workers are moving from Silicon Valley to Austin.
Boston: One of the nation’s top tech hubs, Boston is an excellent place for CS professionals interested in EdTech and MedTech. While the city center hosts many tech and finance firms (and top CS schools), companies like TripAdvisor and Bose are based outside the urban core where rents are lower. The average CS salary in Boston is about $136,000.
Chicago: All the major internet tech companies have large offices in Chicago, making it a solid choice for CS grads eyeing names like Facebook, Salesforce, and Amazon. The Windy City also hosts healthcare companies and big banks. Living in Chicago isn’t cheap, but costs are lower than Silicon Valley or NYC while salaries are comparable. Average pay for CS jobs is around $128,000, with some roles (e.g., Director of Data Science) much higher.
Houston: Houston is home to energy companies, aerospace firms, and large medical centers—all employing thousands of computer scientists in roles from software engineer to cybersecurity analyst. Shell, Chevron, and JPMorgan Chase are among the city’s largest employers, but plenty of tech startups are also hunting for talent. Houston salaries may not top the charts, but the cost of living is relatively low.
