Recently, many University of Melbourne students have been asking CheersYou(清柚教育) about how to convert their GPA through WES when applying to US graduate schools as Australian undergrads.
We all know that besides the regular grades like H1/H2A/H2B/H3/P, the University of Melbourne transcript also includes some other letter grades and the “^” symbol. So does the official WES evaluation count these? That is, when using the free WES calculator to estimate, do we need to enter these grades? Today, CheersYou(清柚教育) will walk you through it:
✅ University of Melbourne Grade Level Explanation

H1: WAM 80+
H2A: WAM 75+
H2B: WAM 70+
H3: WAM 65+
P: WAM 50+
N: Fail
NH: Fail without meeting all pass conditions
S: Approved to take a supplementary/special exam due to special circumstances (e.g., illness)
WAF: Final grade pending assessment
WXT: Extension approved
CMP/FL: Used to mark subjects with no score, usually electives, and not included in the GPA
✅ Free WES Grade Conversion

➡️ For NH: Enter as Failure
➡️ For CMP/FL: No need to enter
➡️ For WAF/WXT/S: No need to enter
➡️ For “^”: No need to enter (From the official WES evaluation transcript, we can see that all subjects with “^” are marked as “Pass”; according to WES rules, subjects marked as “Pass” are not included in the CGPA calculation, so they are not factored into the final WES GPA. Therefore, when using the free WES calculator, we do not need to enter these grades.
❓ Are There Differences Between the Official WES and Free Converter Results?
💡 Yes, there is a difference, but not significant.
➡️ The free WES calculator uses grade levels like HD/D/C/P, while in the official WES transcript, it is divided into A/A-/B+/B/B-/C+/C/C-/D+/D/F, which is more detailed.

➡️ So in general, the official certified GPA is about 0.1 to 0.2 points higher than the free estimate.
