When it comes to applying for U.S. graduate STEM programs, the field is largely dominated by engineering, science, and business. But in fact, media and communication also offer STEM programs.
For example, NYU's MCC and Northwestern's IMC. However, these two programs are among the top 3 media programs in the U.S., so the admission bar is generally very high.
However, Northwestern's other media program, the Master of Science in Communication (MSC), has a relatively lower bar, yet its value and practicality make it highly worthwhile to apply to.
The MSC is a newly designated STEM program, having received STEM certification in 2022.
In recent years, the admission bar is around 3.3–3.4 for overseas undergraduates, and slightly higher for domestic Chinese undergraduates, around 3.5.
The MSC is a one-year program with four core courses and multiple electives.
The MSC is housed within the School of Communication. Although the bar is lower, it enjoys the same reputation and resources as IMC.
It combines theory and practice, culminating in a capstone project where the school helps students build a multimedia portfolio. There is no need to doubt its quality or career outcomes. So, if you have a lower GPA and want to apply to a STEM media program, here's your chance to 'snag' a great opportunity.
Apart from the standard resume, transcripts, recommendation letters, and personal statement, the MSC also requires an interview, though no GRE scores are needed.
