The MSE program in Systems Engineering (SE) at Penn is based at the intersection of electrical and systems engineering, providing students with a deep theoretical foundation and interdisciplinary skills ideally suited to tackling increasingly complex technical systems.
Program Overview
Full-time master’s students can complete the program in 1.5 to 2 years. In the 1.5-year option, students take three courses per semester for two semesters and four courses in one semester, allowing them to graduate in 1.5 years. Alternatively, students can take three courses per semester for three semesters and one course in the final semester, preparing to graduate after two years.
This program offers thesis options for graduate students and provides research direction for those interested in further study. Meanwhile, we encourage students aspiring to a Ph.D. to engage in thesis seminars in two disciplines to enhance their research experience.
Therefore, this program offers students great flexibility and more learning opportunities.
Curriculum Requirements
Students must complete 10 course units from the following four categories as outlined in the Systems Engineering Course Planning Guide (CPG):

Within the Foundation category, 6 course units must be selected:
- Data Science
- System Modeling
- System Design&Optimization
- CATEGORY B: LEADERSHIP i.e., management-related courses
- CATEGORY C: TECHNICAL ELECTIVE technical elective courses
- CATEGORY D: APPLICATION AREA. The last two units in this module consist of elective courses, and students also have the opportunity to take courses at the globally renowned business school—the Wharton School.
Overall, the MSE curriculum is well-structured and comprehensive, with an extremely broad range of selections, satisfying students' eagerness to study various specialized courses.
Admission Requirements
A bachelor’s degree in mathematics, physics, or economic sciences. Students with degrees in other fields who possess quantitative and computational analysis expertise may also apply.
Applicants are advised to have a GPA of at least 3.0, and preference is given to those with substantial practical experience.
Past experience shows that many applicants with a GPA above 3.5 but insufficient internship experience often receive rejections quickly.
Although GRE scores are optional, it is strongly recommended that applicants submit them, as a competitive score will definitely enhance the application.
