These students more or less want to aim for G5 when applying for graduate school, but they worry that their undergraduate ranking outside the Top 20 might prevent them from reaching the threshold of G5. First, the UK undergraduate degree classification:
· First Class Honours: 70% and above
· Upper Second Class Honours (2:1): 60-69% [Strong 2:1: generally not less than 65%]
· Lower Second Class Honours (2:2): 50-59%
· Third Class Honours: 40-49%

Want to aim for Oxbridge?
UK undergraduates aiming for Oxford or Cambridge should ideally have a First Class degree (70%+). For competitive programs at Oxbridge, a score of 75%+ is safer.
Although some programs at Oxbridge also accept high Upper Second Class degrees, this score range is not very competitive. The competition will be more intense if you apply to Oxbridge with such grades. To stand out, it's best to have impressive research/internship/experience; otherwise, the chances are slim.

Aim for Imperial College London (IC) / London School of Economics (LSE) / University College London (UCL)
For competitive programs at Imperial College London (IC), London School of Economics (LSE), and University College London (UCL), the difficulty is not much lower than Oxbridge. Students aiming for these programs should aim for a strong Upper Second Class (65%+) to be safe.
Some competitive programs at IC and LSE even have a minimum entry requirement of a First Class degree. Students with a 2:1 can try less popular programs and UCL (though the overall difficulty of UCL applications has risen this year).
Students with a Lower Second Class degree (2:2) who want to aim for these three schools may still have a chance to receive offers for non-popular programs if they have very rich background experiences.
