When choosing schools for applications, students often refer to major authoritative university rankings, where the top ten are usually dominated by long-established American and British institutions.
However, beyond that, there are many more excellent universities worth paying attention to. Young universities are also beginning to play an increasingly important role in the global higher education sector.
Times Higher Education, one of the four authoritative world university rankings, recently released its 2023 Young University Rankings. It evaluates universities founded within the past 50 years on teaching, research, international outlook, and industry collaboration.

Ranking Methodology
This ranking essentially uses the same methodology as the World University Rankings, but for young universities, the indicator weightings are recalibrated to better reflect their mission.
The performance indicators are divided into five areas:
Teaching (the learning environment) 30%
Research (volume, income and reputation) 30%
Citations (research influence) 30%
International outlook (staff, students and research) 7.5%
Industry income (knowledge transfer) 2.5%
THE Young University Rankings Top 10
The top ten in the 2023 young university rankings are as follows:
From the list, we can see that young Asian universities are strong, occupying half of the top ten spots. Places like Hong Kong and Singapore, which are close to home and whose university reputations are steadily rising, are becoming new choices for many international students.
Ranked fifth is Erasmus University Rotterdam, a name that may be relatively unfamiliar. It is a public research university in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, renowned for its research in business and economics. Two of its professors, Jan Tinbergen (1969) and Guido Imbens (2021), have won the Nobel Prize in Economics.
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, ranked fourth, has long been recognized as one of Hong Kong's top universities and is the first institution in Hong Kong to provide professional engineering education. PolyU currently has over 27,000 students, one quarter of whom are from mainland China, Macau, and Taiwan.
Ranked third is Paris Sciences et Lettres – PSL Research University. Founded in 2010, it aims to become one of the world's leading research universities and currently encompasses 25 independently managed academic and research institutions. The university has established partnerships with institutions such as the University of York, University of Cambridge, Tsinghua University, and Technion – Israel Institute of Technology.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology ranks second this year. As one of Hong Kong's finest universities, HKUST has four main schools offering nearly 50 undergraduate major programs and over a hundred postgraduate study areas. Its Knowledge Transfer Center has incubated over 260 start-ups and holds more than 1,700 active patents.
This year's top spot goes to Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, which is also one of the highest-ranked Asian universities in the THE World University Rankings. NTU currently has 25,000 students from over 100 countries and has a strong exchange network with many renowned global institutions, including Imperial College London, Stanford University, and Peking University.
THE Young University Rankings Top 100
Turkey is the country/region with the most universities on the list this year, with 47 institutions included. France has the most universities in the top 20, with five institutions making the cut.
