2024 U.S. News Ranking Methodology Changes
The U.S. News rankings consider multiple factors including acceptance rates, student-faculty ratios, standardized test scores, research output, and employment outcomes.
U.S. News is a ranking that students and parents pay close attention to and rely on, but recent ranking scandals and withdrawal controversies have continuously raised questions about its fairness.

In response, U.S. News has made even more significant adjustments to its ranking methodology this year compared to previous years. The main changes include:
1. Greater emphasis on social mobility and outcomes for college graduates
2. Increased or decreased weights for some existing ranking factors
3. Removal of the following factors from the 2022-2023 rankings: alumni giving rate, percentage of faculty with terminal degrees, undergraduate class size, and high school class standing. In addition, the ranking factor measuring the proportion of graduates with federal loans will also be removed.
4. Introduction of new ranking factors from third-party sources
5. To improve transparency, the top 90% of colleges and universities will be ranked numerically, with the remaining schools displayed at the bottom decile range.
National universities in the U.S., which offer a full range of programs and large student bodies, emphasize research and award multiple degrees, are the primary focus for students and parents.
The new U.S. News rankings will also include specialty rankings, such as innovation, undergraduate teaching, as well as annual rankings for undergraduate engineering, business, nursing, and computer science. For more details, please visit the official website.
2024 U.S. News Rankings Analysis
Due to the methodology changes, this year's rankings have undergone a major reshuffle, with significant fluctuations across universities.
In the Top 10, Brown University, ranked 13th last year, moved into the top ten, while the University of Chicago dropped out of the Top 10 to 12th place, tied with Cornell University, which rose five spots.
In June this year, Columbia University officially announced it would no longer participate in the U.S. News undergraduate rankings, becoming the first major university to refuse to provide information to the ranking publisher.

But U.S. News, as last year, proceeded to rank Columbia anyway, placing it at No. 12.
In the Top 30, the University of California system staged a dramatic comeback. UC Berkeley and UCLA both moved up five spots to the Top 15, UC Davis surged 10 places to 28th, and UC San Diego followed closely, entering the Top 30.
NYU and Wake Forest University, perennial Top 30 schools, dropped significantly this year, falling out of the top thirty to 35th and 47th, respectively.
The Top 50 rankings also saw many new faces this year. Rutgers University, University of Washington, University of Maryland, Texas A&M University, and Virginia Tech all entered the top 50 with notable rises.
Rankings are still for reference only. They should not be the sole basis for college applications.
When choosing a U.S. college, you should also consider factors such as curriculum, campus culture, cost, location, and campus life, and make a more informed and personalized decision based on your own background.
