Claudia Goldin

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to American economist Claudia Goldin for her outstanding contributions to the study of women in the labor force. She is the third woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Economics and the first to win it solo rather than jointly.

 

Goldin earned her bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and her Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago. She is currently a professor at Harvard University and the first woman to receive tenure in Harvard's Department of Economics.

 

 

Physiology or Medicine Prize: Laying the Foundation for COVID-19 mRNA Vaccines

 

Laureates:

Katalin Karikó, Drew Weissman 

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Hungarian scientist Katalin Karikó and American scientist Drew Weissman for their pioneering contributions to the development of mRNA vaccines.

 

Karikó received her Ph.D. from the University of Szeged in 1982 and served as an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania from 1989 to 2013. She later became Senior Vice President at BioNTech RNA Pharmaceuticals.

 

Weissman earned his M.D. from Boston University in 1987. In 1997, he established his own research group at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the Roberts Family Professor of Vaccine Research and Director of the Penn Institute for RNA Innovation.

 

 

Physics Prize: Experimental Methods for Attosecond Light Pulses

Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz & Anne L’Huillier

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz, and Anne L’Huillier for their experimental methods that generate attosecond light pulses for the study of electron dynamics in matter.

 

French physicist Pierre Agostini earned his Ph.D. from Aix-Marseille University in France in 1968 and is currently a professor at The Ohio State University in the United States.

 

Hungarian physicist Ferenc Krausz received his Ph.D. from the Vienna University of Technology in Austria in 1991 and is currently the Director of the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Germany.

 

Swedish physicist Anne L’Huillier earned her Ph.D. from Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris in 1986 and is currently a professor at Lund University in Sweden.

 

 

Chemistry Prize: Discovery and Synthesis of Quantum Dots

 

Laureates:

Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus & Alexei Ekimov

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry was also awarded jointly to three individuals, recognized for their outstanding contributions to the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots.

 

Moungi Bawendi earned his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1988 and is currently a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

 

Louis Brus received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1969 and is currently a professor at Columbia University in New York.

 

Alexei Ekimov earned his Ph.D. from the Ioffe Physical-Technical Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1974 and previously served as Chief Scientist at Nanocrystals Technology Inc. in New York, USA.

 

 

Literature Prize: Giving Voice to the Unsayable

 

Laureate:

Jon Fosse

This year’s Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Norwegian author Jon Fosse for his innovative plays and prose that give voice to the unsayable.

 

Fosse is known for his minimalist style; one of his representative works is "Septology," published in three volumes from 2019 to 2021. He has received several awards, including the Scandinavian National Theatre Award and the International Ibsen Award.

 

 

Peace Prize: Fighting the Oppression of Women by Authorities

 

Laureate:

Narges Mohammadi

This year’s Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Iranian women’s rights activist Narges Mohammadi for her struggle against the oppression of women and others in Iran.

 

Born in central Iran in 1972, Mohammadi has worked as an engineer, lawyer, and journalist. Arrested multiple times, she is the deputy director of the Defenders of Human Rights Center in Iran and is currently serving a prison sentence in Tehran.
