USC Shuts Down Some CS Master's Programs for Fall 2024, Raises Credit Requirements

The USC Viterbi School of Engineering recently announced that starting from the Fall 2024 semester, it will shut down six specialized master's programs in computer science—including Computer Security, Software Engineering, and others—and only retain four programs such as General Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. The graduation credit requirement for the retained programs will also increase from 28 to 32 credits. Starting from the Fall 2024 semester, the following MSCS specialization degrees at USC will no longer accept applications and will be discontinued once current students complete their studies:

- Computer Security

- Computer Networks

- Software Engineering

- Intelligent Robotics

- Multimedia and Creative Technologies

- High Performance Computing and Simulations

The following MSCS degrees and specializations will remain:

- Computer Science (General)

- Artificial Intelligence

- Data Science

- Game Development

Students who have already applied to the discontinued specializations may be recommended to transfer to the general track or may receive rejection letters directly. At the same time, the credit requirements for the retained programs have all been forcibly raised from the original 28 credits to 32 credits.
