HKU Launches Two New Master’s Programs: Climate Governance and Risk Management, and Chemical Technologies for Health and Material

The HKU Business School has launched two cutting-edge master’s programs for fall 2024 intake: the Master of Climate Governance and Risk Management and the MSc in the field of Chemical Technologies for Health and Material. The one-year climate governance program integrates business thinking with climate science and policy to cultivate interdisciplinary talent for global climate challenges. The 1.5-year health and material chemistry program focuses on innovative applications of chemical technologies in drug discovery and new materials development, preparing students for future challenges in the health and materials industries. Both programs require an overall IELTS score of 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 80. The climate governance program welcomes applicants with a bachelor’s degree, with the first round deadline on January 23, 2024. The health and material chemistry program prioritizes candidates with STEM backgrounds such as chemistry, biology, or materials science; the deadline for non-local students is April 30, 2024. 1. Master of Climate Governance and Risk Management

Program Introduction:

This program is offered by the HKU Business School in collaboration with the Institute for Carbon Neutrality (ICCN). It integrates business acumen with a deep understanding of climate science and policy, aiming to equip students with interdisciplinary expertise needed to address climate change and achieve carbon neutrality through a combination of scientific, policy, and business knowledge.

1 year

Curriculum:

A total of 10 courses:

6 core courses (including a capstone)

4 elective courses

 

Application Materials:

  • Possess a bachelor's degree or equivalent

  • Two letters of recommendation

  • TOEFL iBT 80; TOEFL Paper-delivered Test 550; IELTS overall band score of 6.0 with no subtest lower than 5.5

2. MSc in the Field of Chemical Technologies for Health and Material

Program Introduction:

This innovative and integrated MSc program builds on chemistry to enhance students' knowledge in tackling the evolving challenges of the health and materials industries. The curriculum comprehensively covers the application of chemical technologies in health and materials, with a special focus on drug discovery and the development of new materials.

 

Duration:

1.5 years

 

Curriculum:

Total 72 credits: 5 compulsory courses (30 credits), disciplinary elective courses (18 credits), and a capstone course (24 credits)

 

Application Materials:

  • Possess a bachelor's degree in engineering or science

  • Pass a qualifying test (if required)

  • TOEFL iBT 80; TOEFL Paper-delivered Test 550; IELTS overall band score of 6.0 with no subtest lower than 5.5

 

Background Preferences:

  • Priority is given to candidates with a background in science or engineering disciplines (e.g., chemistry, biochemistry, materials science, biotechnology, medicine, health science, analytical science, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, materials or mechanical engineering)
