The UConn School of Business has launched a new 30-credit Master of Science in Social Responsibility & Impact in Business (Science in Social Responsibility & Impact in Business), starting in Fall 2024.

Program Introduction:

The UConn School of Business has introduced a new Master of Science program (Science in Social Responsibility & Impact in Business): Social Responsibility and Impact in Business, meeting the strong student interest in careers that advance economic, environmental, and social sustainability. This degree will prepare graduates to drive innovative and impactful business decisions, ultimately making greater contributions to companies, organizations, and government.

The MSSRIB program empowers students to develop social responsibility strategies and understand, implement, and lead social responsibility initiatives aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It aims to produce effective contributors to social responsibility and sustainability for businesses, organizations, and/or consulting firms committed to positive change:

Social Innovation and Impact

  • Businesses and organizations are developing innovative solutions that leverage their resources and expertise to address social or environmental challenges posed by the UN SDGs. This may involve entrepreneurship, social impact investment, employee wellness programs, and the creation of products, services, or experiences that contribute to a sustainable future.

Environmental Sustainability Programs

  • Businesses and nonprofits are implementing environmental stewardship programs and adopting eco-friendly practices to minimize their environmental footprint. Focus areas such as the circular economy include reducing carbon emissions, implementing recycling programs, and sourcing sustainably produced materials.

Sustainable Marketing

  • Sustainable marketing is key to good business practice, centered around products, brands, services, and experiences. It encompasses ethical sourcing and distribution, fair labor practices and pricing, and promoting responsible consumption and disposal practices within economic and socio-cultural systems.

Transparency and Ethical Governance

  • Social responsibility extends to a company's governance structures. Reporting practices include disclosing information on business operations, financial performance, and social and environmental impacts.

Community Engagement and Philanthropy

  • Social responsibility strategies include active participation in community development. Companies engage in various ways, including supporting local charities, educational programs, and volunteer efforts to address social and environmental issues.

The program will launch in Fall 2024, with applications opening in May. It offers flexible online and on-campus courses, as well as an optional study-abroad travel course.

The program welcomes students from diverse backgrounds, including business, human rights, communication sciences, economics, and environmental science.
