New Master's Programs for Fall 2025

Columbia University

Master of Science in Climate Finance

Columbia University's Climate School and Business School have jointly launched the Master of Science in Climate Finance.

This interdisciplinary program is designed to train financial experts specializing in future climate change solutions, integrating environmental science, economics, finance, and policy analysis. It is a one-year full-time program.

The curriculum covers fundamentals of climate science, climate policy and economics, green financial product design, carbon markets and trading, and climate risk management. Students will gain hands-on understanding of climate finance through case studies, simulation trading, and site visits.

Applicants typically need a bachelor's degree in a related field such as economics, finance, environmental science, or public policy. Based on admission standards of similar programs, candidates with relevant work experience or a profound understanding of climate change issues will be more competitive.

The inaugural cohort will start in Fall 2025, with applications expected to open in September 2024.

Boston University

MS in Finance

Starting in Fall 2025, Boston University's Questrom School of Business will offer a brand-new MS in Finance.

This STEM-designated program is designed to help students quickly secure high-paying jobs in finance, with a curriculum closely aligned with the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) certification, providing a solid foundation for those pursuing this professional credential.

The BU MS in Finance is a one-year program requiring 33 credits, including five required core courses and five electives.

The program has no restrictions on undergraduate majors. In addition to a written essay, three video essays are required.

There are three application rounds for Fall 2025, with the first round deadline on December 18, 2024.

University of California, Los Angeles

Master of Real Estate Development

UCLA's Luskin School of Public Affairs is launching a new Master of Real Estate Development program this fall.

The MRED program features co-teaching by faculty from the Anderson School of Management, School of Law, and Department of Urban Planning. The curriculum spans the entire process from planning to financing to design, emphasizing equity and sustainability, and integrates ethical foundations with advanced real estate development skills.

The program is 11 months, full-time, including an optional one-week boot camp. Recommended backgrounds include architecture, business, economics, civil engineering, law, management, planning, or public policy.

Experience in real estate or urban development is preferred; at least two years of experience in real estate, urban development, or related fields is recommended.

University College London

UCL School of Management

UCL's School of Management is set to launch three brand-new master's programs for Fall 2025.

New programs opening for Fall 2025:

MSc People Analytics and Human-Centric Management

People Analytics and Human-Centric Management MSc

MSc Finance with Data Science

Finance with Data Science MSc

MSc Marketing Analytics

Marketing Analytics MSc

UCL School of Management is one of the schools offering relatively few master's programs across the university. The launch of these new programs is expected to provide more options for students applying to UCL and UK business programs.

The University of Hong Kong

Master of Social Sciences in Sociology

HKU's Department of Sociology plans to launch a Master of Social Sciences in Sociology in September 2025.

The program will provide training in cutting-edge sociological theory and methods. It caters to those seeking research and analytical skills to advance careers in the public or private sector, as well as those preparing for further doctoral studies.

Previously, only the Chinese University of Hong Kong offered a formal sociology program, while HKU had only criminology, and CUHK's sociology program had high entry barriers.

HKU’s upcoming Sociology master’s will be the second formal sociology program in Hong Kong. Students interested in Hong Kong master's degrees and sociology should pay close attention.

University of Notre Dame

Master of Science in Digital Marketing

Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business has launched a new Master of Science in Digital Marketing (MSDM).

This program is designed for students with business or non-business undergraduate degrees and less than three years of work experience, preparing them for roles such as digital marketing manager, social media manager, and marketing analyst.

The Notre Dame MSDM is a ten-month, 32-credit full-time program and has received STEM designation.

Application requirements include several essays: a Slide Deck, Statement of Purpose, and additional essays. A GPA above 3.3 can waive the GRE/GMAT requirement.

The program will welcome its first cohort in Fall 2025. Currently, it does not support F-1 visas for international students, but may open to international applicants in the future.

Think Rationally, Choose Schools Wisely

The launch of new master's programs brings both opportunities and challenges.

Compared to popular programs, new programs tend to have fewer applicants and less competition. Moreover, being the first cohort, admissions offices often favor diversity, making the admission difficulty relatively more manageable.

For those aiming for top schools, it can be a worthwhile attempt.

However, not all new programs offer a "backdoor" to elite institutions. For instance, Duke's newly added MPA program this year explicitly states that it does not accept fresh graduates or early-career professionals, requiring at least seven years of relevant work experience.

Graduate applications always emphasize "fit." We recommend choosing schools based on your own background and interests. Avoid arbitrary or blind applications.

The Fall 2025 application season has begun—are you fully prepared? We wish everyone the best of luck and may you soon receive your dream school offer!
