As the best public university system in the world, the University of California is beloved by many Chinese international students and local American students. Most people think of going directly from high school to a prestigious undergraduate program, but this is not the only path to attending a top university.
Often overlooked, community colleges are also a great option for transferring into top universities. 20% of UC students are admitted through community college transfer applications, and each year, over ten thousand students from California community colleges alone are accepted.
What Are the Requirements for CC to UC Transfer?
The requirements for transferring from a community college to different four-year universities vary. Here, we will mainly discuss the transfer requirements for the most popular choice: the University of California system!
First, the UC system includes the following 10 schools:
University of California, Berkeley
University of California, Los Angeles
University of California, San Diego
University of California, Irvine
University of California, Santa Barbara
University of California, Davis

University of California, Merced
University of California, San Francisco only offers graduate programs, so it is not within our scope.
Must complete the Seven Course Pattern requirements
- 2 transferable English courses
- 1 transferable math course
- At least 4 transferable courses from at least two of the following different areas
Each course must be worth at least 3 credits and be UC-transferable. For non-major courses, the minimum grade requirement is a C or above or a Pass. AP exam scores of 3, 4, or 5 can be used to satisfy corresponding course requirements. It is recommended to complete the English and math requirements as early as possible.
Students who complete IGETC and the corresponding major courses can earn an Associate Degree at the community college. Therefore, students can also follow the IGETC pattern to complete courses in six areas: 2 English courses, 1 math course, 3 arts and humanities courses, 3 social science courses, 2 physical and biological science courses, and 1 language course. Similar to the Seven Course Pattern requirements above, first, the courses must be transferable, and second, non-major courses must receive a grade of C or better. AP exam scores of 3, 4, or 5 can substitute for corresponding courses. It is recommended to complete the English and math requirements early.
Note that IGETC courses do not have to be completed at the same community college; courses taken at another community college can also fulfill IGETC requirements.

Minimum Overall GPA Requirement
The minimum GPA for transferring from a community college to UC is 2.4, and for international students it is 2.8. Some schools or majors may have different minimum GPA requirements. However, meeting this minimum does not guarantee admission.
Subject-Specific GPA Requirement
Complete the required/recommended courses for your intended major with a grade no lower than B. Other GE courses only need a C or above.

The upper part, Major Preparation, lists the professional courses you must complete before transferring.
The lower part, Additional Approved Courses, are professional courses you can complete before transferring, so you won't need to take them at UC after transferring—after all, UC courses tend to be more difficult than those at community colleges.
