2021 Ranking Methodology
The U.S. News rankings consider a wide range of factors including acceptance rates, student-faculty ratios, standardized test scores, research output, employment outcomes, and more. The U.S. News ranking indicators are fair and authoritative, making it a highly respected and referenced list by students and parents.
This year's ranking indicators have been adjusted slightly, as follows:
Graduation and freshman retention rates: 22%
Social mobility: 5%
Graduation rate performance: 8%
Academic reputation: 20%
Faculty resources: 20%
Student quality: 7% (lowered)
Financial resources: 10%
Alumni giving rate: 3% (lowered)
Graduation debt rate: 5% (new)
National Universities in the U.S. offer a comprehensive range of majors, large student bodies, and a focus on research, granting various degrees. They are the primary focus for most students and parents.
Due to the pandemic, to provide more reference options for applicants without standardized test scores, and reflecting changes in many universities' admissions policies, this year's U.S. News rankings will add over 60 test-blind colleges that do not consider SAT/ACT scores.
Analysis of the 2021 Rankings
This year's Top 10 saw some changes. Princeton remains number one; Harvard, Columbia, MIT, Yale, Stanford, UChicago, UPenn, JHU, and Northwestern continue to hold Top 10 spots with minor fluctuations; Caltech, ranked 12th last year, broke into the top 10 this year; Duke fell out of the Top 10.
In the Top 30, UCSB and the University of Florida are new to the top 30 this year. Georgia Tech and the University of Rochester, which were in the top 30 last year, dropped out to 35th and 34th respectively.
In the Top 50, the University of Miami moved into the top 50 this year; Texas Austin rose from 48th to 42nd; Northeastern University fell from 40th to 49th.
With the addition of the graduation debt rate indicator and corresponding reductions in the student quality (based on standardized test scores) and alumni giving indicators, this year's U.S. News rankings saw slight shifts across many schools. Overall, the situation is similar to last year.
Rankings are still for reference only. Rankings alone should not be the sole criterion for college applications. When choosing U.S. universities, you should also consider factors such as curriculum, campus culture, cost of attendance, location, and student life to make a more informed and personalized choice.
