Times Higher Education released the 2022 World University Rankings on September 2.
With geopolitical competition in the global knowledge economy intensifying, a record 1,662 universities from 99 countries and regions are included this year, making it the largest world university rankings yet.
The University of Oxford tops the list for the sixth consecutive year, with the California Institute of Technology and Harvard University tied for second place. The top 10 continues to be dominated by UK and US universities. Tsinghua University and Peking University are tied at 16th place, the highest ranking ever for mainland Chinese universities.
2022 THE World University Rankings Methodology
The THE rankings place greater weight on academic factors, assessing universities across dimensions such as teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook, making them particularly suitable for students who prioritize a university’s academic environment.
This year, the THE World University Rankings analyzed 108 million citations from 14.4 million research publications, with 22,000 scholars participating in the ranking survey.

Analysis of the 2022 THE World University Rankings
1. UK and US Universities Continue Their Battle for Supremacy
This year, the top 10 positions were occupied by the same UK and US universities for the second year in a row, though with some changes in ranking.
It's a battle of the titans between UK and US universities. While the UK only has two representatives in the top 10 compared to eight from the US, the UK, with Oxford's strong performance, wins the top spot. Oxford has beaten top US institutions such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, and MIT for the sixth straight year.
US universities, of course, maintain an unrivaled "monopoly" in terms of numbers. Eight of the top 10 and 12 of the top 20 are US institutions, extending their dominance in global university rankings to an 18th consecutive year.
This year, the highest-ranked US universities are the California Institute of Technology and Harvard University, tied for second, pushing last year's second-place Stanford University down to fourth.
2. Chinese Universities Shine
This year, 97 mainland Chinese universities made the list, a record high, with 8 appearing for the first time.
After Tsinghua University became the first Asian university to enter the world's top 20 last year, this year both Tsinghua and Peking University have broken into the top 20, tied at 16th place.
Ten mainland Chinese universities made the top 200, another record. In the 2022 rankings, mainland China (97 universities) had the fourth-highest number of institutions on the list, behind only the United States (183), Japan (118), and the United Kingdom (101).
3. University Performance During the Pandemic Influences Rankings
Over the past year, universities have played a vital role in understanding and responding to the COVID-19 crisis.
The vaccine developed by the University of Oxford is being sold in over 170 countries, with more than one billion doses produced, making its top ranking well deserved.
Many universities saw significant increases in citation scores for COVID-19-related research. Eleven mainland Chinese universities, including Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Southern Medical University, Capital Medical University, and Wenzhou Medical University, experienced such rises.
