In July this year, New York University and the London School of Economics and Political Science officially announced the launch of a new double master's degree program in Media, Culture and Global Cities.
The first cohort will enroll in the 2026/27 academic year, spending the first year at LSE in London and the second at NYU in New York, earning master's degrees from both prestigious institutions.

The NYU-LSE collaboration is not the first in the media field. For example, the global media and communications program LSE previously ran with USC has been operating for years and is hailed as a “dream pairing” by media students.
What is a Dual Master's Degree Program?
Dual degree (or double degree) programs are typically jointly established by two universities.
Students usually submit a single application (though some programs require separate applications), complete an integrated curriculum, and earn master's degrees from two prestigious institutions in different countries or even different fields.

Northwestern University × Chinese University of Hong Kong
Dual Master's Degree in Applied Economics and Social and Economic Policy
Duration: 10 months at CUHK + 7 months at Northwestern University
Jointly developed by Northwestern University's School of Education and Social Policy and the Chinese University of Hong Kong's Department of Economics, this program focuses on equipping students with strong public policy and data analysis skills, opening doors to applied economics research and its practical application in policy in both China and the U.S. It has been designated a STEM program.

Yale's Master's in Global Business & Society (GBS) offers dual-degree programs through the M2M Program in partnership with HEC Paris / HKUST / University of British Columbia.

Columbia SIPA offers seven different international dual-degree programs in partnership with six institutions, providing students the opportunity to earn two degrees from two different universities within two years.
Upon completion, students receive both a SIPA degree and a degree from the partner institution.
Among them, only the dual-degree programs with LSE and Sciences Po are fixed track programs. The application and admission process is managed by the partner institution's admissions office; students apply through their official websites and receive admission to both institutions simultaneously.
These two dual-degree programs employ separate admission processes:

Applications are reviewed directly by LSE or Sciences Po; if admitted, students study at the partner institution in the first year and enter SIPA in the second year.

LSE typically requires a UK 2:1 or equivalent (e.g., U.S. GPA 3.3+, prestigious Chinese university 85%+ / others 90%+).

Sciences Po is more competitive, usually requiring a U.S. GPA of 3.6+ or Chinese university 87%+.
SIPA also has dual-degree programs with the National University of Singapore, Hertie School in Berlin, FGV São Paulo, and the University of Tokyo, but these are only open to SIPA MIA/MPA first-year students who meet the respective academic and credit requirements.
Think Rationally, Choose Wisely
While dual master's programs are attractive, they also pose greater challenges and pressure. Before applying, students should consider whether they are suited for such a path:
Admission Difficulty
Many of these programs are powerhouse pairings, meaning admission thresholds are high. You need to honestly assess whether your academic credentials meet the mark and whether your soft background aligns.
Beyond that, the application process itself is a key factor to weigh. Dual-degree applications are rarely as simple as submitting one form; the admission mechanisms are often more complex. You may need to independently apply to both universities and satisfy their distinct requirements, or after passing the first school's review, face a separate interview assessment from the second.
Therefore, before deciding to apply, thoroughly research the specific application rules of your target programs and treat this as a crucial part of evaluating your fit.
Adaptability
Transnational dual master's programs typically have intense, compact curricula, and students usually spend only about a year in each location, meaning they must leave just as they are settling in and building a social network.
In addition to the program's academic rigor, dual master's students must navigate challenges posed by different academic contexts and cultural differences, demanding strong adaptability.
Thus, you need to carefully consider whether you can handle moving between two different countries/regions within two years, adapting to two universities' teaching systems, assessment methods, and cultural atmospheres.
