The Guardian 2026 Ranking Methodology
Unlike other rankings, The Guardian's university league table places greater emphasis on student satisfaction with teaching, staff-to-student ratios, spending per student, and graduate employment prospects.
As a result, it better reflects how students themselves perceive UK universities, earning it the nickname of the UK's version of a "public review" for higher education.

The Guardian 2026 Ranking Changes and Analysis
In the top 10, Oxford, St Andrews and Cambridge remain unmoved in the top three spots. After climbing to first place last year, Oxford retains the top position.
Although less well-known internationally than Oxford and Cambridge, St Andrews holds a special place in the hearts of the British public and is particularly favoured by the royal family – both Prince William and Kate Middleton are graduates.
Within the top 10, Durham and Warwick each rose one place, while University of the Arts London climbed four spots to break into the elite group. Imperial College London, the University of Bath and University College London each slipped by one position.
Among top 20 universities, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Bristol, the University of Sheffield, the University of Exeter and the University of Southampton all improved their rankings. The University of Essex was the dark horse, jumping from 23rd to 12th place – a leap of 11 positions.
