2026 U.S. News Ranking Methodology
U.S. News rankings consider multiple factors, including acceptance rates, student-faculty ratios, standardized test scores, research output, and employment outcomes.
This year's U.S. News methodology remains consistent with last year, continuing to remove first-generation student graduation rates and performance from the ranking factors, reassigning that weight to the most similar Pell Grant graduation rate and performance indicators.
National Universities in the United States offer comprehensive programs, large student bodies, a strong research focus, and a wide range of degrees, making them a primary focus for students and parents.

2026 U.S. News Rankings Analysis
In the Top 10, HYPSM (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT) continue to firmly hold the top five spots, with Yale moving up one place to tie with Stanford at No. 4.
The University of Chicago had an outstanding year, surging 5 spots to No. 6, ahead of Duke, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, and the University of Pennsylvania, all tied at No. 7.
Caltech dropped out of the national top ten this year.
In the Top 30, Carnegie Mellon University broke into the top 20, while Rice, Vanderbilt, the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor, Washington University in St. Louis, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill each moved up one spot.
Within the UC system, UC Berkeley overtook UCLA to become the top campus, while UCSD, UC Davis, UC Irvine, and UC Santa Barbara remained in the Top 40.
