According to the official announcement, WashU will offer an Early Action (EA) option for undergraduate applicants for Fall 2027:

WashU will officially move to a three-track system of ED, EA, and RD, giving students aiming for top 20 schools another strong option.

WashU has long been one of the most solidly grounded private universities in the Midwest, with its US News ranking consistently in the Top 25.
Olin Business School is known for small class sizes and a strong career focus, with a steady pipeline into finance, consulting, and other fields; the School of Engineering's computer science and biomedical engineering programs are also strong, particularly in research resources and corporate partnerships.
However, the reality is that WashU has limited appeal to top students during the ED round, and among the strong applicants admitted in the RD round, many end up choosing higher-ranked institutions, creating challenges in overall enrollment stability.
If UMich adding ED last year was about 'locking people in,' then WashU adding EA this year is about 'expanding the pool.' The approaches differ, but the essence is the same: reducing the loss of top candidates later in the process.
Differences Between ED, EA, and RD in U.S. College Admissions
Early Decision (ED)
This is the most binding application option: if admitted, you must enroll and withdraw all other applications. Typically, all materials must be submitted by November 1, with decisions released by late December.
Early Action (EA)
Unlike ED, EA is non-binding and allows you to apply to other schools. EA deadlines are usually the same as ED, with decisions released from December to January, so you get early results while keeping flexibility.
Regular Decision (RD)
Regular Decision is the most common application option, with deadlines generally in January–February and decisions in spring (March–April). While it gives applicants the most preparation time, competition is stiffest because a large portion of spots are filled during the early rounds.

Advantages and Risks of ED
Advantages
Choosing ED can significantly boost your acceptance rate—at many schools, it can be two to three times higher than RD. Additionally, ED demonstrates strong interest, which is a very positive signal to the school, making them more willing to be flexible on various criteria.
Risks
The binding nature of ED means that if admitted, you must enroll and cannot back out, which is a major constraint for students still weighing options. For example, regarding financial aid, an ED acceptance means forgoing the chance to compare offers and negotiate scholarships across schools.
