The Times Higher Education (THE), one of the four authoritative ranking organizations, has just released the 2026 Asia University Rankings.

2026 THE Asia University Ranking Indicators and Weights
This ranking uses the same 18 indicators as the THE World University Rankings, but with adjusted weights to reflect the characteristics of Asian universities.
These indicators comprehensively evaluate Asian universities across five areas: teaching, research, citations, international outlook, and industry income.
1. Teaching (the learning environment): 24.5%
2. Research environment (volume, income and reputation): 28%
3. Research quality: 30%
4. International outlook: 7.5%
5. Industry income: 10%
2026 THE Asia University Ranking Highlights
Tsinghua University has topped the list for the eighth consecutive year! Peking University remains in second place, while Fudan University, Zhejiang University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University rank 7th to 9th. Mainland China takes five spots in the top ten this year.
The remaining top-10 spots are filled by universities from Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan: National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, University of Tokyo, University of Hong Kong, and Chinese University of Hong Kong.
India has the most ranked universities with 128, followed by Japan (115) and Turkey (109). Mainland China has 97 ranked universities, ranking fourth overall.
Malaysia also performed well this year, breaking into the top 40 for the first time, with six universities in the top 100.

Mainland Chinese University Rankings
Mainland China delivered an outstanding performance in this ranking. Tsinghua University and Peking University occupy the top two spots, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University moved up one place to 9th.
A total of 97 mainland Chinese universities are ranked, with 20 in the top 50, holding a dominant position in the top ten. This year, 21 mainland Chinese universities improved their rankings.
Hong Kong University Rankings
Hong Kong performed well in this ranking, with eight universities listed, two of which are in the top ten, demonstrating strong performance.
The University of Hong Kong remains the top institution in Hong Kong, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong ranks 10th in Asia. Two newly listed Hong Kong institutions directly entered the top 100; the Education University of Hong Kong is the second-highest new entrant, ranking 37th.
Macao University Rankings
Three Macao institutions are ranked this year, setting a new historical high.
The University of Macau, the top institution in Macao, ranks 28th in Asia, marking the region's first entry into the top 30. The Macau University of Science and Technology ranks 52nd, and the City University of Macau, which debuted in this ranking, falls within the 201-250 band.
Singapore University Rankings
Singapore's higher education quality is outstanding globally; while the number of institutions is small, they are all top-tier.
In this ranking, the National University of Singapore remains in the top three, and Nanyang Technological University ranks fourth.
