How is the HKUST AI interview different?
Shifting from fixed recordings to interactive follow-ups
Based on publicly shared interview experiences, the new format no longer involves simply answering pre-set questions. Instead, the AI may ask further follow-up questions based on the applicant's responses.
For example, after an applicant describes their internship experience, the AI might continue by asking about specific responsibilities, project challenges, and personal contributions, aiming to gain a deeper understanding of the applicant's actual experiences.
Evaluation focuses more heavily on personal experiences
Taking the formal interview invitation sent out for the MIMT program as an example, the AI interview primarily revolves around the following aspects:
Personal Background
Application Motivations
Communication Skills
Program Readiness
Therefore, in addition to common topics like self-introduction, "Why School," and career planning, applicants also need to be thoroughly familiar with the specific details and experiences listed on their resumes.
Higher Demands on On-the-Spot Expression
Compared to traditional recorded interviews with fixed questions, interactive AI interviews place greater emphasis on an applicant’s ability to understand questions, organize thoughts, and respond promptly.
Some publicly shared interview experiences mention that the system may ask questions via voice and dynamically adjust subsequent questions based on the responses. The specific number of questions, preparation time, and interview duration may still vary by program.
What Should Applicants Note for HKUST’s AI Interview?
-
Complete the assessment using a Windows or macOS computer; mobile phones and tablets are not supported.
-
Use Chrome or Edge browser version 132 or above.
-
Present or upload a valid passport for identity verification before the interview.
-
You only get one interview opportunity, and you must complete it within the same session once started.
-
Check your network connection, camera, and microphone in advance to avoid interruptions during the interview.
Additionally, the university explicitly prohibits receiving real-time assistance from third parties during the interview. Violating these regulations may result in the cancellation of your application eligibility.

How Can Fall 2027 Applicants Prepare?
In response to changes in the AI interview format, we recommend students prepare thoroughly in the following areas:
Organize Personal Experiences: Familiarize yourself with the internships, research projects, and other activities listed on your resume. Be able to clearly articulate your responsibilities, actual contributions, and key takeaways.
Clarify Application Motivation: Explain why you chose this specific major by connecting it to the program’s curriculum, your personal background, and your career goals.
Practice Handling Follow-up Questions: Don’t just prepare for common interview questions; try asking further questions about your own answers to train your on-the-spot reactions and logical expression.
Prioritize Authentic Expression: Rather than simply memorizing canned answers, focus on naturally and clearly narrating your personal experiences while addressing specific questions.
As the Fall 2027 application season continues to progress, applicants should keep a close eye on the interview arrangements for HKUST Business School.
