New York University is a private research university located in Manhattan, New York City. Its main campus is situated in the Greenwich Village area, centered around Washington Square. The university was founded in 1831.
NYU Steinhardt School was founded in 1890. As one of the largest schools at NYU, Steinhardt offers 80 graduate programs, with popular majors including International Education, Games for Learning, Media, Culture, and Communication, among others. The application deadline for Fall 2019 is February 1 (Regular Decision), and some programs have an Early Decision deadline of January 6 (Click here for more details about NYU Steinhardt).
After a smooth check-in and a short wait, we were invited into the office by the admissions officer. At that point, our teachers took out the list of questions they had prepared from students and began asking them one by one.
1. If my TOEFL or GRE scores don't meet the requirements, can I still apply?
The admissions officer replied: GRE is not required. The minimum TOEFL score we require is 100. If you have 99, we will not admit you. In their words: 99 is denied.
2. What if my GPA is average and doesn't meet the requirement listed on the website?
The admissions officer replied: Students with low GPAs will not be automatically rejected, but it's best to explain the reasons for your low GPA in your Personal Statement. In their words: You better address your low GPA in your Personal Statement, to explain your low GPA such as you felt ill. You should give us an explanation. GPA is different from language test scores; unlike TOEFL, where failing to reach 100 means a straight NO.
3. Although the admissions requirements state that GRE scores are not required, would submitting GRE scores make me more competitive?
The admissions officer replied: In their words: Not necessarily. If your GRE scores are not very good, for example, if they are below the 80th percentile (roughly Verbal 158+), then I suggest you don't submit them.
4. Does having an undergraduate degree from the U.S. give me an advantage over degrees from other countries?
The admissions officer replied: No, the undergraduate institution is important, but we do not give students extra points based on where their undergraduate school is located.
5. If I submit my application before the deadline, can I submit other materials like GRE/TOEFL scores, transcripts, or recommendation letters after the deadline?
The admissions officer replied: No, everything is due before the application deadline. System will remain open, but you couldn't rely on that. Because it's totally depend on the number of application we had. If there is sufficient application, the system will close. If you submit your application too late, it will be at the bottom of the pile. Submit recommendation too late will also make you weak.
In summary: Do not submit any materials late. Late recommendation letters are also detrimental. If you submit late, your application will be at the bottom of the pile and will be among the last to be reviewed. So apply early!!!
6. Is it true that the earlier I submit my application, the better?
The admissions officer replied: In their words: It's good for you. And make you a better applicant. Submitting on time is the most basic requirement, and submitting early also means your application will be reviewed sooner.
7. Do you have any alumni data or employment rates?
The admissions officer replied: 92.7% of 2017 master's graduates were working.
8. How long did it take graduates to find jobs?
The admissions officer replied: We have 79,000 alumni. According to 2017 data, 46.4% of students found jobs before graduation. 30.5% found jobs within 3 months after graduation, and 23.1% found jobs more than 3 months after graduation.
9. What is the approximate percentage of international students?
The admissions officer replied: In 2018, there were 1,414 students, of which 27% were international students from 60 different countries. The remaining 44% were from NY, NJ, and CT, and 29% from other U.S. states.
10. What is the age range of graduate students?
The admissions officer replied: The average age is 26, but students range from 20 to 63 years old.
These were the ten main questions discussed during the meeting with the admissions officer.
