2022 U.S. News Ranking Methodology
The U.S. News rankings take into account a variety of factors, including acceptance rates, student-faculty ratios, standardized test scores, research output, and employment outcomes.
The U.S. News ranking indicators are fair and authoritative, making it the most trusted and referenced list for students and parents.
This year's ranking indicators remain consistent with last year's:
Graduation and retention rates: 22%
Social mobility: 5%
Graduation rate performance: 8%
Academic reputation: 20%
Faculty resources: 20%
Student selectivity: 7%
Financial resources: 10%
Alumni giving rate: 3%
Graduate indebtedness: 5%
National Universities in the U.S. are comprehensive institutions offering a full range of programs, large student populations, a strong research focus, and multiple degree types, making them the primary concern for most students and parents.

2022 U.S. News Ranking Analysis
There have been some shifts among the top 10 universities this year. Princeton University remains at No. 1.
Columbia University moved up one spot from No. 3, and MIT rose two spots from No. 4, tying with Harvard (last year's sole No. 2) for second place. Yale dropped one spot to fifth.
Duke University returned to the top 10 this year; Stanford, University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, Caltech, Johns Hopkins, and Northwestern remain in the top 10.
In the top 30, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Virginia both climbed one spot to No. 25; New York University, Tufts University, UC Santa Barbara, and the University of Florida all rose two spots to tie at No. 28; Rice University dropped one spot to No. 17; and the University of Southern California fell three places to No. 27.
Within the top 50, UC San Diego rose one spot to No. 34; the University of Texas at Austin entered the top 40; Ohio State University, Purdue University, and Villanova University moved into the top 50; the University of Miami dropped out of the top 50.
Compared to last year, the 2022 U.S. News rankings did not see drastic changes in the list of schools, but competition within the top 50 remained intense.
Rankings should still be taken as a reference only. They should not be the sole basis for college applications.
