Digital media is a type of communication media encoded in digital form. It falls under engineering disciplines and refers to information carriers that record, process, transmit, and acquire data in binary form. These carriers include digitized text, graphics, images, sound, video, animation, and other sensory media, as well as the representation media (coding) for such sensory media, collectively known as logical media, along with the physical media used for storing, transmitting, and displaying the logical media.
Digital media can be created, browsed, distributed, modified, and stored on computers, including computer programs and software, digital videos, internet web pages, etc. In contrast to digital media, there are print media such as physical books, newspapers, and magazines, as well as traditional media like photographs and cassette tapes.
In this 21st century where traditional media led by print media is gradually fading and new media marches forward, digital media is almost the most efficient medium for channeling and displaying all data and information.
Branches of Digital Media Majors
Based on temporal characteristics, it is divided into still media (Stillmedia) and continuous media (Continuesmedia). Still media refers to digital media whose content does not change over time, such as text and images. Continuous media refers to digital media whose content changes over time, such as audio, video, virtual images, etc.
Based on source attributes, it is divided into natural media (Naturalmedia) and synthetic media (Syntheticmedia). Natural media refers to digital media obtained from objective world scenes, sounds, etc., after being digitized and encoded by specialized equipment, such as photos taken with digital cameras, videos shot with digital video cameras, MP3 digital music, digital films and TV. Synthetic media refers to text, music, voice, images, and animations generated (synthesized) by computers using specific symbols, languages, or algorithms, such as animated characters created with 3D software.
Based on compositional elements, it is divided into single media (Single media) and multimedia (Multimedia). As the name suggests, single media refers to a medium composed of a single information carrier, while multimedia refers to the representation and transmission methods of multiple information carriers.
For application purposes, we only need to distinguish digital media majors by category, which can be roughly summarized into three types:
One type is computer-related, requiring students to have relevant computer and mathematics backgrounds, with language requirements of TOEFL 90+ and GPA 3.0+.
Another type is art-related, design-oriented majors. For these programs, in addition to TOEFL, IELTS, or GRE scores, students need to prepare their own art and design portfolios according to the school's requirements.
Overall, competition for digital media programs in the U.S. is very fierce. Most master's degree programs require applicants to have a bachelor's degree in a related field (media studies, broadcasting, journalism, film and television, advertising). Of course, relevant work experience can also compensate for educational deficiencies, and some universities may accept students without a media background at the undergraduate level. Certain specialized courses (such as broadcasting) require the submission of personal works (audio tapes or manuscripts). English proficiency generally requires IELTS 6.5-7.0.
What is the difference between Digital Media Technology and Digital Media Art?
Digital Media Art mainly studies how to create digital media artworks using existing means and technologies;
Digital Media Technology mainly studies how to research and explore all means and technologies for creating digital media artworks, with a deeper requirement of designing new methods and technologies to better create digital media artworks.
Duration of Digital Media Programs
For most U.S. universities, digital media and animation undergraduate programs are four years, and graduate programs are two years.
