into a brand-new Fall 2026 program:
Technology, Media and Learning (TML)
Columbia TC Launches the Technology, Media and Learning (TML) Program
Program Overview
The Technology, Media and Learning master's at Columbia is dedicated to creating, designing, implementing, and studying innovative, technology-rich learning environments to transform formal and informal education.
Throughout the program, students will closely examine technological outcomes and the broader cognitive, social, and cultural dynamics, exploring how they influence learning, teaching, and reasoning in complex real-world settings.
Curriculum
The program includes three distinct concentrations (all on-campus):
-
Media, Culture, & Society
(formerly Communication and Education)
Relies primarily on social science research to understand, interpret, and shape how information and communication technologies influence culture and education.
-
Design of Learning Technologies
(formerly Instructional Technology and Media)
Guided by traditions of research in pedagogy and cognitive science, focuses on the innovative creation and application of technologies, enabling new media to become powerful tools for learning and teaching.
-
Design of Games for Learning
(formerly Design and Development of Digital Games)
Focuses on the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of games and closely related technologies (such as mobile apps, interactive media, VR, and AR) for learning and social impact in both formal and informal educational settings.

Students must complete at least 32 credits. The three concentrations share common requirements such as a core seminar, foundational knowledge, breadth requirement, and an integrative project. In addition, each concentration has a set of required and elective courses tailored to its specific focus area.
Common foundational courses cover cognitive issues and technology, social issues and technology, cultural issues and technology, and educational practice and design.

Video Essay Requirement Continues with Adjusted Prompts
Starting last year, many Columbia TC programs introduced a Video Essay requirement in the online application for non-native English speakers. This requirement continues for the Fall 2026 cycle, with some adjustments to the prompts.

Applicants must answer a question within 90 seconds. Each program has a specific fixed prompt, such as:
What/who inspires you?
You can prepare and rehearse your response in advance. Only one recording attempt is allowed, so we strongly recommend carefully considering your answer before submitting it in the online application.
The humanities and social sciences have always emphasized communication skills, and Columbia TC's move aims to better assess applicants' oral English proficiency.

Currently, the master's programs that require a Video Essay include:
