Times Higher Education (THE) has just released the latest World University Rankings 2026.
According to THE, this year's rankings feature a total of 2,191 institutions from 115 countries and regions, once again setting a new record for the scale of evaluation.
The University of Oxford holds the top spot for the 10th consecutive year, with MIT, Princeton University, the University of Cambridge, Harvard University, and Stanford University following closely to round out the top five. The top ten remains dominated by UK and US institutions. Chinese mainland universities continue to perform strongly, with a total of 35 institutions placing in the top 500.
THE World University Rankings Methodology
Different ranking organizations employ different methodologies. Compared to other global rankings, THE places greater emphasis on measuring the performance of research-intensive universities through performance indicators.
The weightings of indicators used to compile this year's THE World University Rankings are as follows:

Key Highlights of the THE World University Rankings 2026
US Still Dominates, but Overall Slides
In this year's rankings, three UK and seven US institutions make up the top ten. The University of Oxford outranks a host of American elite universities for the tenth straight year. The top ten institutions are identical to last year's, though with slight shifts in order.
This year, the highest-ranked US institution is MIT, while Stanford, which was third globally last year, dropped to fifth.
US universities still showcase the quantitative advantage of a higher-education superpower: seven in the top 10, 13 in the top 20, and the largest number of ranked institutions (175), maintaining their global lead. Yet the number of US universities in the top 500 fell to 102, a record low.
Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong Shine
A total of 97 institutions from the Chinese mainland are represented, with five in the top 40. Tsinghua University and Peking University rank 12th and 13th globally, leading Asia's higher education systems.
Hong Kong, China, has eight universities in the rankings, with a record six securing spots in the top 200. The highest-ranked is the University of Hong Kong, at 33rd worldwide, an improvement from last year.
