A Decade in the Making, Ushering in a New Wave of Enrollment Growth
UNC's expansion plan is also part of a ten-year strategic blueprint.
UNC will develop approximately 230 acres at the site of the former Horace Williams Airport and surrounding areas into a mixed-use district integrating learning, living, working, and recreation. Construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2027.
This will be the largest expansion in the university's history since the cornerstone of Old East was laid in 1793, 232 years ago.
The development aims to foster flexible, multidisciplinary collaboration across fields such as health, artificial intelligence, and advanced technology. Last year the university announced plans to add 5,000 undergraduate students over the next decade to meet increasing demand for advanced research, particularly in STEM disciplines. For the Fall 2025 application cycle, it had already admitted an additional 500 first-year students.

This new college will integrate two existing departments from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences—the Department of Global Development and the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment—focusing on environmental problem-solving and interdisciplinary education in ecological science, social innovation, and community engagement.
The new college will continue to support the existing programs of these two departments, including: 2 undergraduate majors (one of which is an Environment and Sustainability major offered jointly with the College of Arts and Sciences), 5 undergraduate minors, 4 master's programs, and 2 doctoral programs.
