According to the "Future of Data Talent" report released by Correlation One last week, innovations in artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) are generating massive amounts of data within enterprises, potentially creating billions of dollars in value. However, the report found that companies are struggling to find data talent due to a lack of supply.
Approximately 40% of companies said they cannot hire or retain data talent due to shortages. The report found that demand for big data analytics skills will only increase, with an estimated 2.7 million new data-related jobs expected in the US job market by 2020.

For example, over 5% of employees at Facebook and Google come from Stanford University. For the three internet companies Dropbox, Palantir Technologies, and Snapchat, the proportion of Stanford alumni reaches as high as 10%. CMU alumni make up over 7% of employees at Uber and Pinterest, while 11% of Yelp employees are UC Berkeley alumni.
Conversely, for smaller companies, it is impractical to compete with large firms for data science graduates from top schools. As a result, many businesses miss out on a considerable number of "untapped and undiscovered" candidates in this talent race.
Correlation One believes that beyond the well-known Ivy League schools, local institutions like Baruch College and the University of Pittsburgh also offer excellent data programs, and Purdue University's doctoral students are top talent in the data field.
After experiencing the pain of struggling to find data talent, high-tech companies should start considering candidates' skills more comprehensively in the future, not just focusing on whether they come from an Ivy League school or have an ultra-high GPA.
Similarly, as a student, during the school selection phase, overall rankings are not everything. You should consider factors such as the school's program strength, employment rate, and your own career plan as criteria for choosing a school.
