Just now, U.S. News released its 2026-27 Best Global Universities rankings. The ranking focuses on academic research and reputation, helping students understand how universities perform in global competition.
This year's U.S. News Best Global Universities ranking covers over 2,250 institutions across more than 100 countries and regions.
Among the 51 subject rankings, four fields have been expanded this year: Water Resources, Chemical Engineering, Energy and Fuels, and Clinical Medicine.

2026-27 U.S. News Global University Rankings Analysis
This year's U.S. News global university rankings saw the highest number of institutions per country/region from: China (409), United States (275), India (123), United Kingdom (93), and Japan (86).
U.S. universities remain the dominant force on the list, with 93 making the global Top 200, accounting for 46.5%—nearly half. Harvard University continues to lead as world No. 1, with MIT and Stanford holding firm at second and third.
Though the University of Washington missed the global top 10 this year, it still outperformed Imperial College London, Princeton, NUS, and other world-renowned universities. As a school ranked 42nd in the U.S. News National Universities list, UW is truly impressive!
Tsinghua University entered the global top six for the first time, firmly securing the top spot in Asia and marking one of the best positions ever achieved by a Chinese university. China has also been the country/region with the most ranked institutions for several consecutive years.
Europe's top three continue to be swept by the UK: University of Oxford (4th), University of Cambridge (5th), and University College London (9th).
The highest-ranked Canadian university is the University of Toronto, at 20th place, seeing a slight decline. Australia's best performer this year is the University of Sydney, though it failed to break into the global top 30.
It's worth noting that while the Ivy League has long represented the pinnacle of U.S. academic standards, schools like Dartmouth and Brown rank outside the global top 100. This shows that in research-reputation-driven world rankings, Ivy League schools do not always have an advantage.
